App Clip Improvements: How we built best-in-class Doc Scanning

🚀 Boosting Conversion with Our Redesigned App Clip Doc Scan

We recently rolled out a redesigned App Clip onboarding experience—and the results are already exceeding expectations.

While our dataset is still early the early conversion metrics are compelling:

📈 Key Wins

• Doc Scan Completion Rate:

→ Now at ~92%.

→ This used to hover between 70–80%, depending on device and environment.

• Full App Clip Flow Completion:

→ Currently ~86% of users who start the App Clip complete the entire flow.

→ Previously, we were closer to 75%.

• Passkey Success:

→ Remains steady at 78%.

→ Including users who skip passkey, the overall conversion is 96%.

🔬 Is It Real? We Double-Checked.

The numbers seemed almost too good to be true, so we validated them manually. We reviewed a random sample of doc scan sessions from Datadog and our internal dashboard.

Result:

✔️ Randomly selected completed sessions and incomplete sessions

✔️ Logs aligned with Mixpanel outcomes

✔️ Everything checked out

💡 What Changed?

The biggest shift was in design and flow efficiency:

• A more intuitive UI for doc scan initiation

• Clearer copy and feedback during scan

• Faster transitions between steps

Small changes = big difference in a mobile experience, especially when it’s your first impression.

Behind the scenes, this improvement wasn’t just about a new coat of paint. While users will notice a more streamlined and intuitive design, the bigger shift happened under the hood. We rebuilt the App Clip in native Swift, moving away from our previous React Native implementation. This change gives the UI a more fluid, native feel—and just works better in the real world.

For our engineering team, it’s also a big unlock. By stepping away from the constraints of React Native, we now have far more control over performance, animations, and native capabilities. It’s a win-win: smoother for users, more flexible for us.

🔮 What’s Next?

We’re continuing to track performance across more sessions, devices, and environments. Early signs suggest this redesign is a step-change in mobile onboarding performance—and we’re just getting started. Feel free to see the new app clip in this video here.
